Biography
Anya Montiel is a curator at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian where she recently curated the exhibition, Ancestors Know Who We Are, featuring the art of Black- Indigenous women artists. Previously she was Curator of American and Native American Women’s Art and Craft through the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative. She received her doctorate and master’s degrees in American Studies from Yale University and holds bachelor’s degrees in Native American Studies and anthropology from the University of California at Davis. While at Yale, she curated the 2013 exhibition, All That Remains: Material Remembrances in Love and Loss, at the Institute of Sacred Music. She has written for American Indian magazine, Art in America, First American Art Magazine, Journal of Modern Craft, and the Oxford Handbook of American Indian History as well as exhibition essays for Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, the Heard Museum, the Hood Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
