East Asian Studies Alumni Conference
November 7 - 9, 2003
General Information
Registration fee.
The registration
fee for the entire weekend, including meals, is $150 per person.
The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and the Council on East
Asian Studies are underwriting a substantial portion
of the cost in order to make the weekend affordable for as many
alumni as possible. We encourage you to return the enclosed registration
form as soon as you can.
Special fee for graduate students.
For
current graduate students at Yale or any other institution, the
registration fee is $15.
Hotels.
We have reserved blocks of rooms at The Colony Inn, 1157
Chapel Street, and the Holiday Inn, 30 Whalley Avenue, each within
2 blocks of Yale's Old Campus. You may reserve a room by calling
the hotel directly. Please mention “Yale East Asian Studies
Conference” to get the discounted rate of $88 single/$98
double at The Colony (203-776-1234); or $93, single or double,
at the Holiday Inn (203-777-6221). Parking is $8/day at both hotels.
The rooms will be held for us until October 14.
Local Transportation.
Most weekend events will be held within
easy walking distance of the hotels. If you think you may need
assistance in getting from place to place, please indicate so
on the enclosed registration form; we will be happy to make
special
arrangements. (We plan to provide transportation to the events
held in the Peabody Museum and Luce Hall, which are a bit of
a hike.) Information about on-campus parking will be mailed
to those
who register for the reunion.
Air Travel.
You may want to consider flying to Hartford (Bradley
Airport) or Providence (T. F. Green). U.S. Air makes connections
to Tweed-New Haven airport from Philadelphia with non-jet commuter
planes only. New York area options include La Guardia, JFK and
Newark airports.
Connecticut Limousine (www.ctlimo.com; 1-800-472-5466) ground
transportation serves Hartford, Newark, La Guardia and JFK airports,
but not Providence.
Driving time from from Hartford to New Haven is one hour; from
Providence to New Haven is approximately 2 hours; and from Newark
to New Haven can be from 2 to 3+ hours, depending on traffic.
Trains.
Amtrak and Metro North both stop at the New Haven train
station.
Special Tours of the Yale East Asia Library in
Sterling Memorial Library, and the Center for Language Study.
Alumni who plan to
arrive in New Haven early may sign up for two special one-hour
tours on Friday afternoon, November 7. The tours are described
in the enclosed preliminary program. Please indicate your interest
on the registration form.
Display of Books by Alumni at the Yale
Bookstore.
If you have
a book in print, please let us know right away. The Yale Bookstore
at 77 Broadway in New Haven will order books for a display of
work by Yale alumni in various disciplines related to East Asia.
Books
will be on exhibit and for sale for several weeks, beginning
November 5, 2003. Click here to let us know.
Biographical Notes from Alumni.
Included in this mailing is a
request for information about your current work, activities and
interests, whether in academics or another field. We will produce
a booklet to be distributed to alumni at the conference/reunion,
and mailed to those who cannot attend. We would like to include
notes from as many alumni as possible, and encourage you to respond.
The final – extended – deadline for submissions is
October 14. Click here to let us know.
