 Pre-Conference Tours

Special tour of the Newberry Organ, Woolsey Hall
Friday, November 4
11:00 am – 12:30 pm
Meet inside Woolsey Hall

Curators will take you inside the organ chambers to explain the technology of this magnificent musical instrument, one of the most renowned Romantic organs in the world. According to University Organist Thomas Murray, "the instrument possesses what could accurately be called an electro-pneumatic 'computer' which captures combinations of all the stops and couplers on the instrument chosen by the performer, using hard-wired electric circuitry with electro-magnets and utilising the pressurized air in the organ to perform the physical work. This technology is exemplified in its perfected form and is entirely in its original 1928 state." The tour will conclude with a demonstration of its musical qualities and capacities.

Special tour of new buildings and projects on Science Hill
Friday, November 4
2:00 – 3:30 pm
Meet in front of Watson Hall,
51 Prospect Street

Yale architects and planners will guide alumni through three new projects: the new engineering and chemistry buildings on Prospect Street, and a new undergraduate observatory in Farnam Gardens. Antique astronomical instruments will be on display in the observatory. You will also have an opportunity to see the Yale Sustainable Food Project garden near the observatory, and to walk through the central quadrangle on Science Hill. Buses will be available for the long trek up Prospect.
