Professor Carl J. Smith
Yale University Ph.D., American Studies

"The Plan of Chicago: Daniel Burnham and the Remaking of the American City"

Carl Smith is the Franklyn Bliss Snyder Professor of English & American Studies at Northwestern University.  He is the author of several books about Chicago history and architecture, and his recent book, The Plan of Chicago: Daniel Burnham and the Remaking of the American City (2006), won the Lewis Mumford Prize for Best Book in Planning History.

At January’s Yale Connection event, Professor Smith will discuss Daniel Burnham’s 1909 Plan of Chicago, which is arguably the most influential document in the history of urban planning.  Chicago’s great architect proposed many of the city’s most distinctive features, including its lakefront parks and roadways, the Magnificent Mile, and Navy Pier.

Professor Smith is also the curator of the Chicago Historical Society’s website on the Great Chicago Fire (www.greatchicagofire.org), which is also a mobile app for the iPhone (listed as "Chicago Fire" in the Apple App Store).  Among many other things, it offers guided tours of sites in the city today that are related to the fire.

We are pleased to have this Yale Connection event in the historic Monadnock Building, whose northern half was designed by Daniel Burnham and his partner John Wellborn Root.  When it was completed in 1893, the Monadnock was the world's largest office building. We are grateful to Farr Associates (www.farrside.com) for hosting this event.
