Yale Women’s Tennis Comes to Chicago

Yale Women's Tennis

Friday, November 7 through Sunday, November 9

The nationally-ranked Yale Women’s Tennis Team will be traveling to Evanston over the Veterans Day weekend to participate in the Northwestern Invite with squads from Northwestern, DePaul and another. (Host Northwestern was ranked No. 15 in the country at the end of the 2013-14 season, while for the second year Yale finished the season ranked No. 49.) Matches will be played at Northwestern’s Combe Tennis Center at 2311 Campus Drive, in Evanston, just a short distance away from the intersection of Lincoln and Sheridan Roads.

The Yale team features three Chicagoans among the eleven young ladies on its roster – team captain Hanna Yu ’15 from Glenbrook North, and freshmen Elizabeth Zordani ’18 from Lake Forest and Carol Finke ’18 from New Trier. Carol’s mom, Lisa Finke ‘87, also was a Yale women’s varsity tennis player, making them the first mother-daughter combo to play for Yale. Also of note, Hanna Yu is the third consecutive women’s team captain calling Chicago home. The last two Yale Women Tennis Captains were Annie Sullivan ’14 from Woodlands Academy and Elizabeth Epstein ’13 from Francis Parker.

The women are led by new Head Coach, Taka Bertrand, who joined the Bulldogs after spending two seasons as head coach at St. John's (NY) in the Big East Conference, where she led the Red Storm to a 22-20 mark. Prior to coaching at St. John’s, Bertrand served as the interim head coach of both the men’s and women’s tennis programs at the University of Chicago. In 2012, she led the women’s team to the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championship Finals and a No. 2 national ranking in Division III, and Bertrand and her staff earned recognition as the UAA Coaching Staff of the Year.

The Yale team has won the Ivy League and earned NCAA tournament bids in three of the last four years. In addition, the squad has received distinction as an ITA All-Academic Team for seven consecutive years, and had four players who earned recognition as ITA Scholar-Athletes last year.
