AYA Assembly LXXII

In 2013, the first planned city in America celebrated its 375th anniversary. Although it has been Yale’s home for three centuries, New Haven has remained largely unknown to many alumni, especially those who were students during the ’70s–’90s when it went through the same kind of decline many U.S. cities were suffering then. But recent students have been able to witness the urban area’s astonishing renaissance, and the goal of Assembly LXXIII (Nov. 21–23, 2013) was to let alumni experience this reality for themselves.

  • AYA Board and Assembly Chair Jimmy Lu ’77 will welcome delegates and guests to the Assembly, and introduce a video of greetings from the Mayor of New Haven, John DeStefano, Jr.

Lecture: New Haven’s First 375 Years
Shubert Theater, 247 College Street
 

  • Judith Schiff, New Haven City Historian and Chief Research Archivist at the Yale University Library, will give us a whirlwind tour of New Haven’s history from the beginning to the present, and explain why the city was important to America long before Yale moved here in 1716.

  • Bruce Alexander ’65, Vice President for New Haven and State Affairs and Campus Development at Yale, will offer an snapshot of the city today and explain why it’s not the same place you may remember from your student days.

New Delegates and their guests will have a special luncheon, with details included in their registration packet; other delegates and guests will find a lunch assignment to a particular residential college dining hall in their registration packets.

  • A specially guided tour of the city many alumni have never seen, highlighting neighborhoods near campus and the impact of New Haven’s rapidly growing biotech industry.

Each of these breakout sessions will focus on a different aspect of life in New Haven today. Assembly participants will have an opportunity to learn more about modern-day life in the city, in conversation with either civic authorities or the Yale students who live here.

  • Every year since 1952, the Yale Medal has been conferred to honor outstanding individual service to the University. This year’s recipients reflect the range of service and leadership the AYA strives to recognize with this award. We honor the remarkable contributions of the Medalists and the ways they have chosen to give back to our community of scholars and friends.

Assembly Keynote Plenary Session: Celebrating Our Volunteers
Room 114, Sheffield-Sterling-Strathcona Hall, 1 Prospect Street

  • Come hear about the amazing work being done around the world by Yale alumni volunteers on the University’s behalf. Moderated by AYA executive director Mark Dollhopf ’77, this session will review success metrics from the AYA’s first Strategic Plan (2007–2012), recap alumni programs from the past year, preview upcoming events, and provide plenty of new ideas that your group could consider. The session will also feature the results of the first-ever AYA Travel Photo Contest.

INFORMATION ON ALUMNI PROGRAMS: SESSION I
 

This session (and a second one held at 1:45 p.m. this afternoon; see below) will provide an opportunity for Assembly attendees to learn more about current AYA programs and to provide input on new initiatives. Session presenters will offer an overview and/or annual report and include time for Q&A, as well as information on how to get involved.

 

  • Alumni Leadership/Board of Governors Interest

    Repeated at 1:45 p.m.; see below.

    What kinds of volunteer leadership opportunities are available to Yale alumni through the AYA? This session will help current volunteer leaders learn about service in new and additional roles, including service on the AYA Board of Governors and how a Yale volunteer can become a Board member. The session is open to all Assembly attendees who would like to know more about other volunteer leadership opportunities at the AYA. Delegates in the second or third year of their terms who think they might be interested in Board service are especially encouraged to attend.

 

  • Yale Day of Service: Getting Started!

    Wondering how you can get the Yale Day of Service program going in your area? Come to this session to learn how we can help you to reach out and make your community stronger while connecting with other members of the Yale family. AYA staff and Day of Service volunteer leaders will answer questions and share their experiences to help you get started!

 

  • Shared Interest Groups

    In this session you will learn about the Association of Asian American Yale Alumni (AAAYA) and planning highlights from their reunion, April 10-13. In addition, you will hear an update from the Yale Alumni Nonprofit Alliance, including program initiatives and their first “Social Enterprise” conference, April 5, 2014.

 

  • Yale Alumni Service Corps (YASC)

    You are invited to learn more about YASC’s 2014 service trips in Nicaragua, West Virginia and California for college mentoring, and our first trip to India. Our volunteer-led programs build on the diversified skills of our participants for service trips that will improve lives and provide opportunities in the communities we visit. Projects are developed for volunteers to work alongside local people, enjoy
    meaningful cross-cultural exchanges, and form incredible bonds with fellow alumni of all ages who have a passion for service. Come and listen to volunteers’ stories from previous trips, and learn more about the exciting new trips planned for next year..

  • At lunch, Assembly participants will join with those attending the Yale Alumni Fund Convocation. University Vice President Linda Lorimer ’77 JD will present the second annual Yale-Jefferson Public Service Awards, an alumni-student honor sponsored by Students and Alumni of Yale (STAY), given annually to recognize three Yalies — one alumnus, one graduate/professional student, and one undergraduate — who inspire others in the Yale community through innovative and sustained contributions of service to the greater good.

A second opportunity to learn more about AYA programs and to provide input on new initiatives. The selection of sessions will be similar to those offered in the morning (see 10:45 a.m. listing).

 

  • Alumni Leadership/Board of Governors Interest

    What kinds of volunteer leadership opportunities are available to Yale alumni through the AYA? This session will help current volunteer leaders learn about service in new and additional roles, including service on the AYA Board of Governors and how a Yale volunteer can become a Board member. The session is open to all Assembly attendees who would like to know more about other volunteer leadership opportunities at the AYA. Delegates in the second or third year of their terms who think they might be interested in Board service are especially encouraged to attend. (Note: This is a repeat of the 10:45 a.m. session.)

 

  • Yale Day of Service: Volunteer Leader Session

    Have you been a Yale Day of Service volunteer and are thinking about getting more involved as a site leader, club coordinator or even Regional Director? Are you already a front line leader looking to take the next step? At this session, Yale Day of Service leaders and staff will talk with you about leadership roles and what it takes to serve as one of the primary members of the Yale Day of Service team.

 

  • Shared Interest Groups: Yale Veterans Association

    Join us for a presentation and discussion about the Yale Veterans Association (YVA) and Yale’s engagement with our military services. We will review current YVA activities, hear from current active duty military officers studying and working on campus, and receive the latest updates about the Air Force and Navy ROTC units. These programs are recent additions to Yale and reflect a renewed emphasis on global and strategic issues and a commitment to public service. Learn more about how you can strengthen the mission of YVA to support fellow veterans and cultivate leaders.

 

  • YaleGALE (Yale Global Alumni Leadership Exchange)

    YaleGALE is an extraordinary international alumni volunteering initiative that works with universities around the world. Its mission is to advance education and leadership through alumni engagement among participating universities, to foster rich cultural understanding, and to share best practices in alumni relations. Please join us to discuss the 2014 program that will visit four countries in Europe. We will also explore the possibility of shared programs in the U.S. with our partners from previous trips, including the U.K., China, Turkey, Japan and Australia, and discuss the potential for future programs in other countries.

 

  • Alumni Schools Committees: A New Vision

    Jeremiah Quinlan ’03, Dean of Undergraduate Admissions, and Bowen Posner, Associate Director, will discuss the evolution of the Alumni Schools Committee (ASC) program, especially its renewed emphasis on the ASC membership as a corps of passionate ambassadors for Yale. Quinlan and Posner will discuss recent developments, including improved on-line presence and communications for ASC members; the pilot of Yale’s first virtual ASCs in an effort to enhance efficiency; and the development of new training modules designed to increase transparency about the role of the ASC in the wider admissions process.

Attendees will break out by interest, constituency and/or activity to discuss bringing your leadership together with the goals of the strategic plan. In addition, meetings will be held for task forces and boards, as listed below; these meetings are intended for task force/board members only.

    Graduate School Alumni Association, Annual Fall Meeting

    AYA delegates who are members of the GSAA Executive Committee will meet to conduct their annual fall meeting. AYA delegates who are not GSAA board members are welcome to attend. We will also be meeting on Saturday morning from 8:30 to 11:15 a.m. at Rose Alumni House, 232 York Street.

 

  • 3–4:30 p.m.
    Yale Clubs and Associations

    Please join other Yale Club and Association volunteers for a plenary session in which you will hear from alumni representatives of Yale Blue Green to learn more about how you can plan sustainable events in your city; the newly formed SA@Y (Social Alumni at Yale) who will give us a brief update on social media; benchmark your Clubs activities against other Clubs and learn about other new initiatives in regional activities.

 

  • 3–4:30 p.m.
    SIG Leadership Development:
    So You Want to Have a Conference?

    Shared Interest Group (SIG) conferences offer a variety of opportunities from networking and relationship-building to impacting our communities and telling our stories. During this session, we will discuss the importance of alumni conferences and how the AYA can help groups realize their vision through program development. We will explore specific themes including workshop organization (e.g. Yale in Hollywood); video marketing and story-telling (presented by Hugo Perez ’93, M30A Films); the value of social media and sustainability (presented by Beverly Jurenko ’86, chair of the YaleWomen DC Conference); and organic conference development through alumni networks (presented by Ruth Botsio ’09, vice president of the Yale Club of Ghana). You do not want to miss this opportunity to learn more about shared interest groups and be inspired to develop programming and collaborations. Refreshments will be served.

 

  • 3–4:30 p.m.
    Professional Schools

    Professional School volunteers — delegates, members of each school’s board, and other leaders — are invited to an open discussion with AYA Board Chair Jimmy Lu ’77. Come share your thoughts on how AYA and the professional school alumni associations can collaborate and amplify each other’s efforts.

 

  • 3–5:15 p.m.
    Yale College Class Leadership

    Please join us for what we hope will be a lively and interactive session. We will begin with an update of Yale College Classes, followed by a report from Kathrin Lassila ’81, editor of the Yale Alumni Magazine, about exciting new changes to the YAM website. Then Tim Harkness ’87, Class Secretary and AYA Board of Governors member, will offer tips and strategies on the successful use of social media; and we will conclude with a panel of volunteers sharing class success stories.

 

  • 3–5:15 p.m.
    Major Cities

    Major Cities leaders will convene to share examples of creative new approaches to familiar activities, like the “Civil War Road” educational travel program spearheaded by the Yale Club of Washington, DC; strategic corporate sponsorships for events in San Francisco; and collaborations across several SIG and professional school chapters for Community Case Studies in Chicago and Foodtober in New York. (The AYA’s Major Cities program includes Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New Haven, New York, San Francisco, and Washington, DC.)

    This session is for YaleGALE (Yale Global Alumni Leadership Exchange) Board members only.

AYA Volunteer Leadership Awards Reception

  • Join us for a wine and beer reception with hors d’oeuvres to celebrate the presentation of this year’s AYA Leadership Awards for Volunteer Innovation and Service, and the AYA Board of Governors Excellence Awards for alumni groups and programs. Together we will congratulate these outstanding volunteers and groups for their efforts on behalf of Yale and their communities.

Dinner on your own. (Many Classes, Clubs, SIGs and other constituencies are planning their own by-invitation dinners, cocktail receptions and other events this evening.) If you’re free, this will be your opportunity to try one of the many fantastic restaurants downtown that have given New Haven its reputation as a destination for “foodies.”

Historical Tour of Grove Street Cemetery
Meet at the entrance, 227 Grove Street (end of High Street)

  • To celebrate New Haven’s 375th anniversary, join long-time amateur historian Tom Gottshall ’67, president of the Yale Alumni Association of Central South Carolina, for a guided tour of the world’s oldest private nonprofit cemetery. The tour will focus on the legendary greats of city and campus lore.

  • Join your friends at the popular “AYA Alumni Village.” This free reception for all Yale alumni and their guests provides a place to meet up with classmates and others before going to The Game. There will be free food and refreshments.

  • Assembly delegates, ex-officio delegates and other AYA-authorized invitees from AYA constituencies may request up to two free tickets to The Game, and may order additional tickets at $17 each at the time of registration. (All others should purchase their tickets directly from Yale Athletics.) Those who preregister via the on-line Assembly registration form will find their tickets in their welcome packets when they check in at Rose Alumni House. Note: Tickets furnished by the AYA do not include parking passes, which must be purchased separately from Yale Athletics.
