Four years ago, the AYA began a new tradition
during reunion weekends: the Celebration of Yale Singing at Woolsey
Hall. The Celebration
draws upon the talents of alumni from all reunion classes, with
several segments conducted by Fenno Heath ’50, B.Mus. ’51,
M.Mus. ’52, the Marshall Bartholomew Professor Emeritus and
former Director of the Yale Glee Club.
Those who were once Glee
Club members – and even some who were not – attend
a workshop at Hendrie Hall on Saturday morning, where Professor
Heath rehearses them for their performance on the stage that afternoon.
Former Whiffenpoofs and Whim ‘n Rhythm make an appearance,
along with members of S.L.O.T. (“Seems Like Old Times” – Whiffs
from the 1940’s and 1950’s) and – for the first
time this year – alumni from the Slavic Chorus.
Even the
audience gets a chance to sing old favorites such as “Aura
Lee,” “Eli Yale” and “Bright College Years,” the
last accompanied by the Newberry Organ, innumerable white handkerchiefs,
and nary a dry eye.
If you love singing and plan on attending your
reunion next Spring, don’t miss this wonderful opportunity
for some real “Boola Boola!”
