in Service to Society

Friday, April 25 - Saturday, April 26, 2003

Executive Summary Home

Almost 275 delegates, guests, and alumni convened to explore Assembly LXII: Engineering and Applied Science in Service to Society. The 150th anniversary of Yale Engineering was celebrated at a time of renewed commitment under President Levin's leadership. The weekend involved not only an overview of the status and prospects of Engineering at Yale, but also demonstrations and tours to allow AYA delegates to fully appreciate the scope of current teaching and research.

Among the questions addressed were:

  • What exactly is Engineering and Applied Science?
  • How does it affect our lives?

  • What is the role of an engineering program at a university committed to providing the highest quality liberal arts education?

  • How does such a university produce better engineers?

  • What is distinctive about Yale engineering?

  • How can education related to engineering and technology be better incorporated into the curriculum for non-engineers?
