Assembly
LIX: Free Speech, Free Expression and Free Inquiry at Yale
Friday, April 26 through Saturday,
April 27, 2002
The Assembly featured an
opening presentation by Dean Richard Brodhead and Professor Gaddis
Smith on the guiding philosophy that informs Yale's policies on
free speech. Subsequent sessions focused on participatory discussions
of issues involving both student and faculty expressions of opinion.
We also presented a graphic demonstration of free speech at Yale
with "Free Speech Day at Yale," in Beinecke Plaza on Saturday morning.
This "Hyde Park at Yale" experience allowed alumni to sample the
broad spectrum of views held by Yale students. The Assembly also
included the annual Yale Medal Dinner and the Community Service
Summer Fellowship Luncheon.
