Assembly
LIX: The Tercentennial of Yale University
Thursday, October 4 through
Friday, October 5, 2001
Executive Summary
AYA delegates joined students, faculty, and staff
who turned out in droves for the three days of events marking the
end of Yale's 300th birthday celebration, which included the following:
- A Convocation on Cross Campus, with berobed
well-wishers from academic institutions around the world and a
procession of Yale students from over 100 countries proudly bearing
their national flags;
- A symposium titled "Democratic Vistas,
Global Perspectives," with special presentations by many
of the faculty who highlighted the Tercentennial DeVane Lectures
series;
- The Yale 300 Festival at the Yale Bowl, with
displays showcasing campus departments and groups, including several
of the most popular attractions at the Tercentennial Open House
in October;
- A Tercentennial Show, with appearances by some
of the alumni from the "300 Years of Creativity and Discovery"
weekend in April, as well as a performance by singer and composer
Paul Simon; and
- Yale's first ever Sunday afternoon football
game, this contest being with Dartmouth.
The last three U.S. presidents -- all Yale graduates -- visited
the campus during the past year. Bill Clinton '73 J.D. spoke during
this final weekend; his predecessor in the Oval Office, George
H.W. Bush '48, gave a special presentation at the April Tercentennial
Weekend; and his son, President George W. Bush '68, received an
honorary degree at Yale's 2001 Commencement ceremony.
In his keynote remarks at the Convocation, President
Levin indicated that the Tercentennial was a fitting occasion to
sum up Yale's current condition and direction, and he noted the
major contributions Yale and other great universities make to society:
educating leaders; serving as a model of freedom of expression and
inquiry; serving as an engine of economic growth; fostering the
development of the local community; and promoting greater understanding
among the peoples and nations of the world.
